Understanding Indigenous Models of Clinical Practices
Indigenous Models of Clinical Practices merge cultural wisdom with contemporary healthcare to offer a holistic and respectful approach to well-being.
These models provide a comprehensive view of health—addressing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects—and prioritise the involvement of the community and family (whānau) in the care process.
By blending traditional knowledge with modern practices, these models deliver care that is both effective and deeply aligned with Indigenous values.
Ngākau Purotu: Our Indigenous Model
Ngākau Purotu, meaning "Beautiful Heart," is our Indigenous model of clinical practice.
This framework offers a holistic approach to well-being by integrating cultural values, spiritual beliefs, and personal goals into care plans. It ensures that healthcare addresses not just physical health but also respects and incorporates the cultural and spiritual aspects that are crucial to a person’s overall wellness.
This inclusive model aligns care with the individual's unique needs and values, creating a comprehensive and respectful approach to health.
The Ngākau Purotu framework is built on four key principles:
Ngākau Aroha: Let a loving heart guide your words and decisions. Compassion and empathy should drive every interaction, ensuring care is delivered with genuine kindness. This principle encourages caregivers to approach every situation with understanding, fostering trust and comfort for those in their care.
Ngākau Maia: Be strong, courageous, and steadfast, even in challenging times. This principle reminds caregivers and clients alike to stay resilient and determined, reinforcing the importance of perseverance in the healing journey. It promotes bravery in the face of adversity, essential for overcoming obstacles.
Ngākau Mahaki: A peaceful mind and genuine heart lead to the best outcomes. Maintaining calmness and sincerity fosters a supportive care environment, promoting healing for both individuals and their whānau. This principle highlights the significance of inner peace and integrity in achieving positive results.
Ngākau Wawata: Shared dreams lead to greater success. Collaboration and collective vision are essential for achieving well-being. This principle underscores the power of unity and teamwork, advocating for a community-centred approach where shared goals drive collective healing.
Ngākau Purotu ensures that care is not only clinically effective but also culturally respectful.

Transforming Healthcare Systems
The integration of the Ngākau Purotu framework into healthcare systems signifies a major shift towards more inclusive and culturally respectful care practices. As more healthcare providers adopt these models, we anticipate improved health outcomes, especially in Indigenous communities where cultural resonance is crucial for healing.
Furthermore, the adaptability of this framework to other Indigenous and minority communities worldwide offers a promising path forward in global healthcare, fostering greater understanding and respect for cultural diversity in clinical settings.
